During this period the Richmond District came to be known as “The New Chinatown”. Responsible for advising Bank and its CEO on developing business markets and increasing the Bank’s market share in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Office marketed both residential and commercial properties. United Bank, S.S.BFounder, Chairman and CEO. 1974-1986. Ben L. Hom founded United Federal Savings and Loan Association (United) in 1974. In July 197, the association successfully converted to capital stock form through the sale of 100,000 shares of common stock. In May of 1983, United changed its charter to that of a savings bank and also completed the sale of an additional 600,000 share of common stock. In May 1984, it converted to a state licensed stock savings bank and has operated since under the name of United Bank, S.S.B. Under the leadership of Ben L. Hom, United expanded to 26 branches throughout California. In October 1984, Ben L. Hom received, on behalf of United, The Savings and Loan Association of the Year award presented by the U.S. Department of Commerce. United Bank was the largest minority owned financial institution in the United States with assets of approximately $750 million as of December 31, 1985. The financial institution has been renamed to United Commercial Bank. Hom moved to San Francisco with his family when he was eight years old. He attended San Francisco public schools, including George Washington High School and San Francisco State University. Ben is married to Patricia Lee Hom and is the proud father of four children: May, Jane, Shirley and Ben Jr., and nine grandchildren. Ben and Patricia Hom have called San Francisco home since childhood and continue to make the city their home.
